PI normally requires that candidates should have proven experience in surveillance and a strong background relating to insurance or other investigations. The successful candidate will:
- possess strong communication, investigative, and report-writing skills
- have their own high-quality handheld and pinhole camera equipment, regular camera equipment, a laptop with internet capabilities, and possess a sound knowledge of operating their equipment
- have a valid Private Investigator Licence
- have the ability to travel throughout the Province of Ontario with a strong flexibility of work hours
- maintain a Strong work ethic and attention to detail
- be able to write meticulous and detailed notes and reports
List of core knowledge competencies

- Ethical accountability and responsibility, risk management, decision making application and communication application of relevant legislation, laws, policies & procedures, written skills including notebook and report writing, computer/technology skills (for on-line reporting systems)
- This Private Investigator program gives a student introductory skills at the theory level, towards a career in the investigative/enforcement arena.
- This program will also assist a student to obtain a Private Investigators license in the Province of Ontario, made under the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services (MCSCS).
- The student will be able to study for and negotiate the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services (MCSCS) Private Investigator exam.
- The student will be able to conduct simple and complex investigations, self-manage time and caseloads, testify in court and quasi-judicial hearings and forums, have a sound knowledge of all provincial legislation and the scope of their powers under the PSISA Act.

The student will be adept at investigative techniques and their application to the various kinds of investigations such as:
- Long Term and Short Term Disability Investigations
- Accident Benefits Claims
- Life Style Maintenance Investigations
- Death Claims
- Surveillance
- Videography, and photography Claimant Interviews
- Other Interviews
- Claimant Locates
- Financial Investigations
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention
