Is this exam for you?

  • Alberta: candidates for the General Insurance Level 1 licence. Exam: the Alberta General Insurance Level 1 exam, set by the Alberta Insurance Council (AIC).
  • British Columbia: candidates for the Level 1 General Insurance Salesperson licence. Exam: the BC Level 1 General Insurance Salesperson exam, run by the Insurance Institute; the licence is issued by the Insurance Council of British Columbia.

Not covered: Ontario (see the Ontario RIBO Level 1 and OTL mock exams), Level 2 and Level 3 exams, adjuster exams and other provinces.

The official exams

  • Alberta General Insurance Level 1: 100 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours, pass mark 70%, written in person (AIC computers in Calgary and Edmonton, paper elsewhere).
  • BC Level 1 General Insurance Salesperson: 100 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours, closed book, pass mark 70%, online with a virtual proctor or in person in Vancouver.

What you get

  • Standard Access (CAD 29 per exam): the diagnostic (40 questions, one attempt), the area quizzes (Alberta 5, BC 4; 10 questions each, untimed, unlimited attempts) and four full-length timed mock exams with four attempts each, with results by email. Access: 30 days from approval, or until your exam date if that comes first.
  • Full Access (CAD 49 per exam): the same tests with eight attempts per mock exam, access until your exam date and the CCEC guarantee.
  • Alberta Combo or BC Combo (CAD 89 each): Full Access for that province's exam, plus the LLQP mock exams for all 4 modules (the life licence exam) and PDF study guides for the province exam areas (Alberta 5, BC 4), until your exam date, with the CCEC guarantee.

Every mock exam has 100 questions in 120 minutes, as on exam day. The official pass mark is 70%; CCEC uses a higher readiness mark of 75%.

CCEC guarantee (Full Access and Combo). If you do not pass the official exam on your first attempt, you can have one further access period to the same Full Access, until your new exam date, at no charge. Send your official result notice and your new exam date through the support form. This is not a cash refund.

Who can register

To register you need to be preparing for one of these exams and to meet the licensing body's own requirements for it:

  • Alberta: the Alberta Insurance Council requires General License Qualification Program (GLQP) certification from an approved education provider (valid for one year) before you write, and a CIPR number to register for the exam.
  • British Columbia: the Insurance Council of British Columbia requires one of its approved education routes and the Council Rules Course for the Level 1 licence.

You also need a valid government photo ID and proof of your exam booking showing your exam date, uploaded with the Mock exam document upload form within 3 days of registering; the link is in your registration confirmation email.

Eligibility to write and licensing requirements are set by the Alberta Insurance Council and the Insurance Council of British Columbia, not by CCEC.

How registration works

  • Choose your exam and access type and complete the registration form, including the eligibility declaration. Then upload a copy of your government photo ID and proof of your exam booking using the Mock exam document upload form (the link is in your registration confirmation email), with the same email address you registered with, within 3 days.
  • Pay online by credit card at the end of the form. An unpaid registration is cancelled automatically after 15 minutes, and you can register again at any time.
  • Assessment. Your details and documents are checked against the eligibility requirements, usually within a few hours if everything is in order. If our Admissions team needs anything else, you are told exactly what to send and by when. If your documents have not arrived, you receive reminders, the first about 2 hours after registering.
  • Access. If approved, you receive your access email with the link, your access code and your access end date. If not approved, you are told why, and your fee is refunded in full by the same payment method within 2 to 3 business days.
