AI-Augmented Architectural Drafting and Policy (CPD)
A 40-hour continuing professional development (CPD) course on AI-assisted drafting workflows and current Ontario building policy, for drafting professionals and informed project owners. Canadian Career Education College (CCEC) delivers the course in English.
Course Overview
Architectural drafting now involves managing digital design data as well as producing drawings. This course covers the move from traditional CAD to AI-assisted workflows, and how the Ontario Building Code and current housing policy shape drafting decisions.
It also suits people who want to understand drawings well enough to work effectively with contractors, designers, and inspectors.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Generative design: use AI tools to explore floor plan and massing options, then check the results for technical accuracy
- Compliance checking: use AI-assisted tools to review drafts against zoning and Ontario Building Code requirements before permit submission
- Concept to CAD: turn conceptual sketches into editable CAD layouts with AI image-to-geometry tools
- Generative space planning: generate floor plan variations based on site constraints and code requirements
- Prompting for design: write precise technical prompts to guide AI-generated designs, including materials, lighting, and structural logic
- Policy-driven design: model Ontario “missing middle” housing options with generative design tools
- Policy interpretation: understand current Ontario policy on residential density and sustainable building, and how it affects drafting

Admission Requirements
Path A: Working Professionals
- For architects, technicians, engineers, trades leaders, and project managers.
- A current resume, or a copy of a diploma or degree in a related field (architecture, engineering, construction management, or trades).
- At least 1 to 2 years of experience in architecture, engineering, or construction is recommended.
- Members of the OAA, PEO, or AATO may be fast-tracked for enrolment.
Path B: General Interest
- For homeowners, real estate investors, and small business owners.
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent; or the Mature Student Assessment (MSA) for applicants 18 years of age or older without a secondary school diploma. Learn about mature student status.
- A basic understanding of residential construction or renovation is helpful.
International Applicants
- Applicants from any country are welcome.
- This course runs less than six months. A study permit and a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) are not required. Applicants in Canada are responsible for making sure their status allows short-term study.
- Completion does not qualify a student for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).
Delivery and Assessment
100% Online
Self-paced study through the College learning management system (LMS), with real-time instructor support. Practical skills are assessed through instructor-monitored online evaluations.
100% In Person (Vaughan Campus)
Instructor-led classes with hands-on practical training. Attendance requirements are set out in the course syllabus.
In both formats, written examinations are completed online and are open-book. LMS orientation details are provided to all students before classes begin. Online students must meet the College System Requirements. This course uses current versions of AutoCAD, Revit, and cloud-based AI tools. Online students need a computer that can run them: Windows 11 or macOS 14 or later, at least 16 GB of memory (32 GB recommended), a graphics card with at least 4 GB of video memory, 20 GB of free SSD storage, and a stable high-speed internet connection.
