Applying for Your Study Permit - Guide

Please note: The college staff at Can-College cannot advise on immigration requirements. However, we can direct you to the relevant information (below).

Option One.  (Study Permit Extension)

Suppose you, a current Can-College student, have a study permit expiring before the completion of your study. In that case, you can request the college to  provide recommended documentation supporting your study permit extension application to be able to complete your program and graduation.

Option Three. (Restoration of study permit after expiration)

If your current study permit has expired, you have 90 days to restore your status by getting a new admission and applying for a study permit. You can apply for a new admission at Can-College; if approved, you have to apply to IRCC for a new study permit and once approved, you will start studying. Upon completion of the study, you can apply for a closed work permit and transition your status from student to foreign worker without leaving Canada.

Can-College offers the following incentives in any one of the following options. (Offer valid through to December 31, 2024)

  • *5-10% discount on the total tuition fee.
  • Priority processing to admission decision and documentation to support within Canada study permit application.

Option Two. (Finished Study at Can-College and enrolled in a new program)

If you are a current college student who has completed, or is close to completing, the study program and you wish to continue studying in a new program, you can apply for a new admission at the college. If approved, Can-College will provide your documentation to support your study permit application for another one-year term so that you can continue to study without leaving Canada. Upon completing the study, you can apply for a closed work permit and transition from student to foreign worker without leaving Canada.

Being Compliant.

November 15, 2024- The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship confirmed that new regulations impacting the International Student Program have now taken effect,

“Moving forward, international students must apply and be approved for a new study permit before changing learning institutions...” This change will not impact you if you are continuing studying with CCEC and not transferring your current study with the new/other college.

If you have a study permit, it is extremely important to remember that you are expected to actively pursue your studies and make reasonable progress toward completion. These enrolment statuses are considered “actively pursuing studies".

You cannot apply for a study permit extension, renewal or restoration from outside Canada,

As of January 22, 2024, new study permit applications require a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from the province.  If you are a current student, your study permit validity and study permit extension application from inside Canada will not be impacted.

Study Permit. Extend – Renew - Restore. Inside Canada process does not require IRCC Attestation Letter

See Immigration Canada’s website for information about the consequences of travelling outside of Canada while in maintained status
