Extending a Study Permit From Inside Canada

Who This Is For

• Current CCEC students whose study permit expires before they finish their program.
• CCEC students continuing in a new program after completing, or nearly completing, their current program. As a continuing student extending your study permit at CCEC, you do not need a PAL.
• Apply before your permit expires; we recommend at least 30 days before. You cannot extend a study permit beyond your passport’s expiry date.
• If your permit has already expired, you cannot study until your status is restored. See IRCC: if your permit expired.

Step 1: Get Your CCEC Documents

1. New program only: apply for admission to the new program at Admission Application. Use an email address that is not linked to your current student profile, and save your new reference number. You do not need to upload documents again. Current students extending for the same program skip this step.
2. Submit the documentation request form with your LOA (if you have a valid one for the new program), a copy of your passport, and your current study or work permit.
3. If approved, you receive an admission offer and an invoice for the LOA fee and first tuition instalment. You have 30 days to accept and pay. The College then prepares your document package.

Step 2: Apply to IRCC

The extension application can only be submitted from inside Canada.

1. Read the IRCC guide: Extend your study permit.
2. Sign in to your IRCC secure account and start an application to extend your study permit from inside Canada.
3. Upload your documents.
4. Pay the CAD $150 study permit fee, plus CAD $85 for biometrics if IRCC asks for them, and submit.

Documents IRCC May Ask For

• Passport: the personal information page and any pages with stamps or visas
• Current study permit or work permit
• New Letter of Acceptance (LOA) and confirmation of enrolment
• Proof of completion of your previous program, if applicable (certificate, transcript, or account statement)
• Proof of funds, such as bank statements and proof of tuition paid
• A digital passport-size photo
• A letter of explanation (optional, but recommended)
• A medical exam, only if IRCC requires one

Maintained Status and Travel

• Your study permit normally expires 90 days after your program ends. The 90 days start when you receive official notice from the College that you completed your program.
• If you apply to extend before your permit expires, you have maintained status and may keep studying and working under the same conditions while IRCC processes your application.
• If you leave Canada while on maintained status, you cannot resume studying or working until you have a valid study permit. Read IRCC guidance on travel during maintained status.
• Study permit holders must actively pursue their studies and make reasonable progress toward completing their program.
