Upcoming modules

The Modular Learning Model

The Holistic Palliative Support and Grief Navigation program is divided into five modules.

Module 1: Foundations of Palliative Care and Canadian Standards

This introductory module establishes the core philosophy of "Total Care." It provides the essential legal and ethical framework required to work within the Canadian healthcare system.

  • Key Topics: History of the hospice movement, ethical principles of autonomy and dignity, and navigating Ontario healthcare legislation.

  • Outcome: Students will understand the "Palliative Approach" and the professional boundaries of a support provider.

Module 2: Holistic Symptom Management and Comfort Care

Focusing on the physical aspect of the holistic model, this module teaches how to support patient comfort without over-medicalizing the dying process.

  • Key Topics: Recognizing physical distress, non-pharmacological comfort measures, and the difference between treating a disease and supporting a person.

  • Outcome: Students will be able to identify signs of discomfort and implement dignity-preserving care strategies.

Module 3: Communication Excellence and Family Dynamics

Communication is the most critical tool in a Grief Navigator's kit. This module focuses on the "soft skills" that are often the hardest to master.

  • Key Topics: Active listening techniques, facilitating difficult family meetings, and managing conflict during high-stress transitions.

  • Outcome: Students will gain the confidence to lead sensitive conversations and provide a calming presence for families in crisis.

Module 4: Diversity and Spiritual Care in End of Life

Canada’s strength is its diversity. This module ensures that support is inclusive, respectful, and culturally competent for all patients.

  • Key Topics: Cultural humility, understanding various religious rituals surrounding death, and providing spiritual support for non-religious or secular patients.

  • Outcome: Students will be equipped to create a personalized care plan that honors the unique cultural and spiritual identity of the patient.

Module 5: Grief Navigation and Professional Resilience

The final module focuses on the journey after a loss and the long-term health of the professional.

  • Key Topics: Models of grief (including complicated and disenfranchised grief), bereavement support techniques, and "The Resilient Provider" (preventing burnout and compassion fatigue).

  • Outcome: Students will be prepared to guide families through the mourning process while maintaining their own emotional well-being and professional longevity.

This program does not require PAL or a study permit for international students”
