About Bridge Training

About 20 percent of jobs in Canada are regulated to protect public health and safety. As a general rule:

  • If your occupation is regulated, the provincial or territorial regulatory authority decides whether your qualifications are recognized. You need a certificate, licence, or registration to use the protected title or to practise.
  • If your occupation is not regulated, recognition is usually at the employer’s discretion.

Regulatory authorities, professional associations, apprenticeship offices, and employers set the requirements for assessing and recognizing your qualifications. Requirements differ by occupation and may differ between provinces and territories, so check the requirements of the body in the jurisdiction where you plan to work.

CCEC bridge training programs vary by occupation. In general, they assess your skills, compare them with Canadian licensing and employer expectations, and provide guidance and training to help close the gaps. The programs are open to applicants in Canada and outside Canada.

Eligibility

You Must

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have post-secondary education from outside Canada.
  • Have work experience in your occupation outside Canada.
  • Have English language proficiency.

And One of the Following

  • Be in Canada with legal permanent or temporary status, such as a visitor, or a foreign national with a valid study or work permit.
  • Be outside Canada and meet Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) entry requirements for short-term study. A Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) is not required for programs of six months or less.

Participants are billed only for the specific services they use and may not pay the full estimate. Licensing fees are not included.

Other Licensing Requirements

For regulated professions and trades, a licence to practise or a certificate of qualification may also require:

  • examinations of your knowledge and competencies
  • proof of language proficiency
  • a criminal record check
  • a Canadian work placement or practicum
  • reference checks or proof of professional standing
  • an orientation course or bridging program
  • additional academic or professional requirements

These requirements are set by the regulatory body, not by CCEC.
