Mature student status may be granted to applicants who are over 19 years old and do not have a high school diploma or GED. It is intended to allow applicants who have not completed high school the opportunity to be considered for admission based on the skills and experience they have acquired since leaving school.
If a prospective student does not have a grade 12 education certificate which is equivalent to a Canadian secondary school certificate due to any reason, the college will still consider the student for admission to its programs if the student passes a qualifying test that has been approved by the Superintendent (The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities Ontario).

The Can-College Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Diploma is a one-year full-time program designed to train and develop professionals in the area of health and safety, with a mixture of business management skills and specialized technical health and safety skills-related training. All courses in this program have a focus on “system thinking” rather than “incident thinking”.
Program Details
The effective management of workplace health and safety is important for the health and safety of workers, the longevity of organizations, the success of the business, and the protection of the environment. Throughout North America and the Western world, the effective management of workplace and environmental health and safety issues has become an increasingly important and expected dimension of responsible business practice.
The discipline of OHS is rapidly changing to address increasingly complex workplace needs worldwide. Legislations in most jurisdictions governing workplace health and safety practices are also becoming more sophisticated and stringent and have contributed to a growing employer's need for professional health and safety expertise.
Employers having any size, are now focusing to identify, evaluate, and communicate information about workplace and environmental conditions that may have negative effects on workers’ health, productivity, and the environment. Employers need health and safety practitioners, supervisors, managers, and leaders who are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to plan and implement strategies intended to control and manage potential workplace hazards.
Learning Objectives and Skills
- Deepen knowledge in Canadian occupational health and safety legislation and best practices, with a focus on Ontario
- Understand how to create occupational health programs, policies that meet legislation, law, standards and best practices
- Demonstrate an understanding of the roles that individuals play in providing a healthy and safe workplace (WSIB, Public Health, unions, managers, and employees)
- Demonstrate knowledge of fundamentals in promoting workplace health and safety, such as occupational hygiene, ergonomics, and workplace mental health
- Understand basic chemistry, toxicology, and physiology
- Demonstrate knowledge in how to recognize, assess, control, and eliminate hazards in the workplace
- Demonstrate knowledge in problem-solving through providing inspections, safety inspections, and safety audits
- Analyze potential environmental risks and develop strategies to mitigate them
The successful graduate may adopt the following:
- Work in a variety of settings, such as healthcare, construction, and commercial (as in an occupational health and safety role)
- Act professionally and accountable for all decisions made regarding the health and the safety of the workforce.
- Promote and maintain a safety-first culture in the workplace by demonstrating a working knowledge in occupational health and safety principles, scientific principles, and relevant legislation.
- The ability to use verbal and written communication to communicate health and safety objectives, policies and procedures to all parties
- Participate as a facilitator of the Joint Health and Safety Committee and maintain collaborative working relationships when facilitating and conducting inspections
- Track progress of resolutions for identified safety issues for timely completion and corrective actions
- Identify areas of non-compliance and root causes and make professional recommendations on matters requiring corrective actions
- Assist in providing emergency response planning, fire prevention, and detection plans for organizations in accordance with legislation, regulations, and standards.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Promoting health and safety within a work environment.
- Analyzing workplaces and design initiatives to control, eliminate, and prevent disease caused by chemical, physical, radiological, or biological agents.
- Inspecting workplaces to investigate whether they are in compliance with state and federal laws or employer policies
- Conducting analyses on the effectiveness of safety and health programs
- Researching health and safety issues by reviewing relevant legislation, internal data, external sources and networking with other safety professionals
- Identifying the need for, researches and writes recommendations for corporate health & safety programs, policies and procedures
- Monitoring health and safety risks, and hazards in the workplace
- Advising employees on how to minimize, or ultimately avoid, risks and hazards in the workplace
- First aid and nursing duties
