Grading Policy and Methods of Evaluation for Short Study/Micro Credential Certificate Programs

To maintain the high standards of professional development at Canadian Career Education College (Can College), students are evaluated based on their engagement, comprehension, and practical application of the course material. The following methods of evaluation ensure that every graduate has met the specific learning objectives of their chosen Short Study or Micro-Credential program.

Methods of Evaluation for Short Study and Micro-Credential Certificate Programs

1. Attendance and Participation

For professional development and CPD certificates, active engagement is a core requirement.

  • Minimum Attendance: Students must meet the attendance thresholds outlined in their specific course syllabus. For many short-term programs, 75% attendance is required to qualify for certification.

  • Interactive Engagement: In live online or in-class sessions, students are evaluated on their participation during Q&A segments and group discussions.

2. Practical and Skills-Based Assessment

Our programs focus on "real-world" readiness. Evaluation often includes:

  • Project-Based Learning: In fields such as AI, Coding, and Skilled Trades, students may be required to complete a specific project or technical task that demonstrates their ability to apply the skills learned.

  • Case Study Analysis: For legal and healthcare support programs, students are evaluated on their ability to analyze specific scenarios and provide solutions based on current industry standards or legal frameworks.

3. Theoretical Evaluation

To ensure a solid grasp of the subject matter, programs may include:

  • Quizzes and Knowledge Checks: Short assessments delivered during or at the conclusion of a module to verify the retention of key concepts.

  • Final Assessment: A comprehensive test or final quiz may be administered at the end of the program. For NCA Prep classes, this often involves simulating the exam-writing methodology taught during the session.

4. Grading and Certification Criteria

  • Passing Grade: Most Micro-Credential programs require a minimum score of 60% on all assessments to be eligible for a Certificate of Completion.

  • Pass/Fail Designation: Certain professional development seminars are graded on a Pass/Fail basis, focused primarily on full attendance and the completion of all required activities.

1. Overall Grading Scheme and Weighting. To ensure that graduates have mastered the Vocational Learning Outcomes (VLOs) required for employment, student performance is evaluated through a blend of theoretical testing and practical skill demonstrations. The overall grade is calculated using the following weighted distribution:

  • Module Quizzes (Theory): 20%
  • Mid-Term Assessment (Theory & Applied): 20%
  • Lab Assignments / Scenario Drills (Practical): 30%
  • Final Capstone Project / Practical Exam (Practical): 30%
  • Total: 100%

2. Description of Evaluation Methods

  • Module Quizzes: Short, multiple-choice and short-answer quizzes administered at the end of each module. These evaluate the student’s retention of regulatory frameworks, safety protocols, and foundational terminology.
  • Mid-Term Assessment: A comprehensive written and applied exam halfway through the program. It tests the student's ability to synthesize information from the first half of the course and apply it to standard industry scenarios.
  • Lab Assignments / Scenario Drills: Formative practical assessments conducted during lab hours.
  • Final Capstone / Practical Exam: A cumulative, simulated workplace evaluation. The student is presented with a complex, real-world problem and must execute the entire workflow from diagnosis/intake to resolution/documentation without instructor assistance.

3. Minimum Passing Grade & Graduation Requirements

To successfully graduate from their respective program and receive the certificate, a student must achieve:

  • An overall cumulative grade of 70% or higher across all combined evaluations.
  • A minimum passing grade of 60% on the Final Capstone / Practical Exam specifically, demonstrating baseline occupational competence.
  • Attendance of at least 80% of all scheduled instructional and lab hours.

4. Academic Integrity and Rewrite Policy

If a student fails an evaluation (scores below the minimum threshold), they are permitted one (1) rewrite or practical re-test for that specific assessment. The maximum grade attainable on a rewrite is capped at the passing minimum (e.g., 70%). Failure of the rewrite requires the student to repeat the module. All evaluations are strictly subject to the College’s Academic Integrity Policy regarding plagiarism and unassisted work.

Issuance of Certificate

Upon the successful meeting of all evaluation criteria, the student will be issued a Professional Certificate of Completion.

  • Processing Time: Digital certificates are generally issued instantly via LMS system if course is taken in-person within 10 to 15 business days following the final session.

  • Verification: All certificates include a unique serial number for verification.

Important Note on Performance

Failure to meet the minimum attendance requirements or achieve a passing grade on required assessments may result in the withholding of the certificate. In such cases, students may be eligible for a one-time retake as per the C.C.E.C. Guarantee for specific programs.
